The Best Time to Visit Bonaire
We often get asked when the best time to visit Bonaire is. The answer is actually short: anytime. It’s practically always beautiful weather on Bonaire, with temperatures around 32°C year-round, so no matter when you visit, you can enjoy being outside and soaking up the sun. However, it’s often a bit warmer in August and September because there’s less wind (which makes it slightly less suitable for kite surfers and windsurfers). But diving into the sea or the pool an extra time is of course no punishment.
Rainy Season
Guests who consider visiting Bonaire in the fall or winter sometimes ask: “Is it a good idea to come then? Isn’t it the rainy season?” That’s true, the period from October (through March) is officially known as the rainy season. But where in the Netherlands we might have days of dreary, overcast, and rainy weather, that’s very rare on Bonaire. When it rains, it’s often short, heavy showers after which the sun comes out again and the island feels refreshed. Rain also often falls at night or in the early morning. Don’t let that stop you!
Flying from the Netherlands
A vacation to Bonaire is not cheap; lately, ticket prices have risen, and especially during the holiday periods, it can be a challenge to find affordable flights. Currently, you can only fly to Bonaire from the Netherlands with TUI and KLM. As seasoned travelers ourselves, we’re happy to help with a few tips.
- Book well in advance (+6 months) or last minute (-2 months); ticket prices are often highest if you check around 3 to 4 months before departure.
- It often pays off to check if you can depart a day earlier or later.
- The low season runs from April through September, during which ticket prices are often lower.
- If you find a cheap outbound flight but the return flight is still expensive, book a one-way ticket and wait a bit before booking the return flight. Especially outside of holiday periods, prices can drop further.
- Consider flying via Curaçao and then take a local airline (ZAir or Divi Divi, return for 180 euros) to Bonaire. KLM, TUI, and Corendon fly to Curaçao, and ticket prices are sometimes hundreds of euros cheaper per ticket.
